NASA Delays Her Journey Back to Earth
NASA astronaut Sunita Williams, along with her colleague Barry “Butch” Wilmore, has been on an extended mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS) since June 2024. Their initial assignment, part of Boeing’s Crew Flight Test, was intended to last only eight days. However, due to technical issues with the Boeing Starliner spacecraft, their stay has been prolonged, with their return now scheduled for March 2025.
Technical Challenges with Boeing’s Starliner
The Boeing Starliner capsule that transported Williams and Wilmore to the ISS encountered significant technical problems, including helium leaks and thruster failures. These issues rendered the spacecraft unsafe for the return journey, necessitating an uncrewed return to Earth for repairs. Consequently, NASA decided that the astronauts would return aboard SpaceX’s Dragon capsule, with the Crew-10 mission slated for launch no earlier than late March 2025.
Assuming Command and Continued Contributions
In September 2024, Williams assumed command of the ISS for the second time in her career, leading Expedition 72. During this extended mission, she and Wilmore have been actively engaged in various scientific experiments, maintenance tasks, and spacewalks.
Notably, on January 31, 2025, they completed a 5-hour and 26-minute spacewalk to remove a faulty radio unit, marking Williams’ ninth extravehicular activity and bringing her total spacewalk time to over 62 hours.
NASA’s New Return Plan
Since the Starliner spacecraft is not currently reliable for the astronauts’ return, NASA has decided to bring them back using SpaceX’s Dragon capsule. This decision means that Williams and Wilmore will remain aboard the International Space Station (ISS) until the Crew-10 mission launches in late March 2025.
This mission will carry four new astronauts to the ISS, enabling Williams and Wilmore to take the returning Dragon capsule back to Earth.

Williams’ Role and Contributions During Extended Stay
Despite the unexpected extension, Sunita Williams has continued to contribute significantly to space research. In September 2024, NASA appointed her as commander of the ISS for Expedition 72, making this her second time leading a space mission.
Throughout her extended stay, she has participated in numerous scientific experiments, maintenance tasks, and spacewalks.
Notably, on January 31, 2025, she completed a spacewalk lasting over five hours, during which she and Wilmore removed a faulty radio unit. This marked her ninth spacewalk, bringing her total time spent outside the ISS to over 62 hours.
Family Support
Although her extended mission was unplanned, Sunita Williams’ family remains supportive. Her husband, Michael J. Williams, reassured the public that she is mentally strong and passionate about space.
Furthermore, NASA has confirmed that both astronauts are in good health and adapting well to their prolonged stay in microgravity.
Looking Ahead: The Journey Home
As NASA and Boeing work on resolving Starliner’s technical issues, Sunita Williams continues to make history aboard the ISS. While she eagerly awaits her return, her extended stay highlights the resilience and adaptability of astronauts facing unexpected challenges in space.
Now, all eyes are on the upcoming Crew-10 mission, which will finally bring her home. – sunita williams stuck in space
